They are can fly almost as soon as they hatch, but only for short distances until they fully mature; at which point they can cover many miles in a day. Their large plumed crests and tails serve as display purposes and both male and female have them, though the males tend to have larger crests and tails and glossier feathers. The gloss on their feathers also serves as a waterproofing, and water and snow normally just slid off them.
